Hezbollah attacks on Israel

Security sources in Lebanon told AFP that Hezbollah militants fired mortar rounds and rockets into several Israeli army posts.

The confrontations began when around 20 Katyusha rockets and mortar rounds were fired at the Ramta and Sammaqiyeh positions in the Shebaa Farms, security sources in Lebanon said, without confirming whether the targets had been hit.

Hezbollah artillery also fired on Israeli army positions at Aamfit, on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, they said.

An Israeli military source in Jerusalem said Hezbollah carried out a coordinated mortar and small-arms attack on an army post at Har Dov, in the Shebaa Farms.

Army radio said one member of a Hezbollah commando that infiltrated Israeli-held territory had been killed.

Israeli warplanes bombarded an area around Kfarshuba, firing two missiles, before returning and firing two more around Shebaa.

It was not clear if there were any casualties in those raids.

The US has supported the Israeli action saying Israel has a right to defend its territory.

Meanwhile Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has vowed to show an iron fist against “hooligans” trying to halt this summer’s pullout from the Gaza Strip, as police used water cannon to prevent a mass blockade of the roads.

As a new opinion poll indicated that support for the prime minister’s disengagement plan had slumped to an all-time low, Mr Sharon told his security chiefs they must not allow ultra-nationalists to hold the country to ransom and block the implementation of a plan that has won parliamentary approval.

In Jerusalem, police could be seen baton-charging protestors who tried to sit down in the middle of the main road from Tel Aviv and then turned the water cannon on them.

Similar protests took place on major highways and junctions throughout the country.

Initial police reports however said few had been shut for long, with the exception of the Tel Aviv ring-road, which was closed for around 45 minutes.
